Social Media for Photographers in India: Show Your Work and Find Paid Shoots

Partha Sarathi CeeraFounder, Gig'le

A vintage-inspired editorial poster featuring a photographer in side profile holding a camera to his eye. The image uses a bold red background, deep black shadows and warm cream halftone textures, creating a striking screen-printed, retro photographic aesthetic. The composition uses dramatic contrast, intricate camera details and a large area of red negative space.

Social media for photographers can feel like a full-time job. You can post every day and still not get a single paid enquiry, because each platform does a different job and only some of them lead to work.

This guide goes through the platforms photographers in India use, grouped by what each is for, so you can choose where to spend your time. Gig'le is on the list, and so are the others.

Social media for photographers: showing your work

These are where people look you up and decide whether they like your style.

Instagram

Instagram is where many people look up a photographer before getting in touch. A focused grid, a short bio saying what you shoot and where, and highlights grouped by type of shoot make it easy to see what you do.

Good for: being found, showing your style, conversations that start in DMs. Less good for: finding paid shoots in an organised way. Enquiries arrive when they arrive.

We compare it with Gig'le in Gig'le vs Instagram for artists.

Behance

Behance is Adobe's platform for creative portfolios. It suits full projects: a whole wedding story, a brand shoot or a series, with the context around the pictures. Photographers, designers and illustrators around the world use it.

Good for: detailed project write-ups and an international audience. Less good for: local paid work in your city.

Your own portfolio website

A website with your own name and address is the one place you fully control, with a link that looks professional on a quote or an email. Website builders made for photographers, such as Pixpa, combine a portfolio site with client galleries and a store for prints.

Good for: looking professional, delivering photos to the people who hired you, being found on Google for your name. Less good for: bringing in new people on its own. Visitors come from your other platforms.

Platforms for photographers to find paid work

Showing your work is half of it. These platforms are where people who need a photographer go looking.

Wedding directories

For many photographers in India, weddings are a large part of their paid work, and couples often start their search on wedding planning sites. WedMeGood, which describes itself as a wedding planning website and app, has a photographers category by city with ratings and reviews, and photographers can register as vendors.

Good for: wedding enquiries in your city, and reviews from past couples. Less good for: anything that is not a wedding.

Google Business Profile

If you meet people in person, for shoots at their location or at a studio, a Google Business Profile can put you on Google Maps and in local search results, with reviews. A photographer who travels to the people who hire them can usually list as a service-area business without showing a home address.

Good for: people nearby searching "photographer near me".

Gig'le

Gig'le is a social network for artists in India, and photography is one of its crafts. Organisers and venues post gigs on the Gigs board, each with the craft, location, experience level and pay stated, and you can filter to photography and your city. You press Apply on the ones that suit you, the organiser is notified and can accept or decline, and you agree the details with them directly.

The Events board lists the shows, open mics and other events in your city, which is useful both for finding people who need a photographer and for building a portfolio of live work. The photography page gathers photography gigs and events in one place, and the photos you post on your profile are what organisers see when you apply.

Good for: paid event and live photography in your city, with the pay stated up front. Less good for: an international audience. That is what Behance is for.

How to get photography clients

Whichever platforms you use, the same habits turn attention into paid shoots.

  • Say what you shoot and where. "Wedding and event photographer, Hyderabad" in your bio is clearer than "visual storyteller".
  • Show the work you want more of. If you want event work, show event work. People hire you for what they have seen you do.
  • Make it easy to get in touch. One clear way to reach you, the same on every platform.
  • Reply quickly, with a short, clear quote: what is included, how many edited photos, when they will be delivered and the price.
  • Ask for reviews after every shoot, on the platforms where future customers will see them.
  • Go where the events are. Live events are where you meet organisers, musicians and venues who need photographers again and again.

Before you accept a shoot

Agree the details in writing: the date and hours, what you will deliver and when, the fee and any advance, travel, who can use the photos and how, and what happens if the event is cancelled. Our live performance agreement checklist is written for musicians, but most of it applies to a photography job too: dates, payment, travel and cancellation.

How to choose

You do not need every platform. Start from what you need most now.

  • Be found and show your style: Instagram
  • Show full projects to a wider audience: Behance
  • Look professional and deliver photos: Your own portfolio website
  • Wedding enquiries: A wedding directory such as WedMeGood
  • People nearby searching for a photographer: Google Business Profile
  • Paid event and live photography in your city: Gig'le, local organisers and venues

A simple set-up to start with

  1. One place to be found. Usually Instagram, kept focused on the work you want.
  2. One place that is fully yours. A simple portfolio website with your best 20 to 30 photos.
  3. One place to find paid work. A wedding directory if you shoot weddings, and somewhere organisers post gigs and events near you.

Keep your best recent work at the top everywhere. Whoever finds you first, that is what helps them decide.

Frequently asked questions

Which social media is best for photographers in India?

There is no single best one, because each does a different job. Instagram is where many people look photographers up, Behance suits detailed projects for a wider audience, and a portfolio website is the one place you fully control. Many photographers use Instagram plus one or two of the others.

How do photographers in India find paid work?

Through Instagram and word of mouth, wedding directories such as WedMeGood, a Google Business Profile for people searching nearby, and platforms where organisers and venues post gigs, such as Gig'le.

How do I get photography clients as a beginner?

Say clearly what you shoot and where, show the work you want more of, reply quickly with a clear quote and ask for reviews after every shoot. Photographing live events in your city is a good way to build a portfolio and meet organisers who need photographers.

Do I need my own website as a photographer?

It helps. A portfolio website is the one place you fully control, it looks professional on a quote, and photographer website builders also let you deliver photos through client galleries.

Can I find photography gigs on Gig'le?

Yes. Organisers and venues post photography gigs with the location, experience level and pay stated, and you can apply directly. The photos on your profile are what organisers see when you apply.
